520mm Nozzle Separator 15-40m³/h Continuous Chemical Catalyst Recovery Industrial Separation

The Nozzle Separator Centrifuge is the workhorse of our nozzle separator lineup, purpose-built for high-capacity industrial chemical applications requiring robust, reliable, and continuous solids-liquid separation. With a massive 520mm bowl diameter processing 15-40 m³/h and continuous non-stop solids discharge, this machine delivers the throughput and uptime that large-scale chemical plants demand.

Engineered for harsh chemical environments, the separator is available in SS316, Duplex 2205, or Hastelloy C-276 construction to handle corrosive and abrasive process streams. The no feed interruption design is critical for continuous chemical processes where production stops translate directly to significant financial losses. Optional ATEX certification enables safe operation in potentially explosive atmospheres common in solvent-based chemical processes.

The bearing assembly (rated 30,000+ hours), hardened nozzle inserts in tungsten carbide or silicon carbide, and vibration monitoring system ensure reliable long-term operation in 24/7 production environments. The integrated PLC control system provides real-time monitoring of bearing temperature, vibration levels, bowl speed, and motor current for predictive maintenance.

Application Scenarios
  • Catalyst Recovery: Continuous separation and recovery of precious metal catalysts (Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru) and base metal catalysts (Raney Nickel, Cu/Zn) from hydrogenation and petrochemical process streams, with >99% capture efficiency protecting millions in catalyst inventory
  • Pigment and Dye Concentration: Thickening of titanium dioxide (TiO₂), iron oxide, carbon black, and organic pigment slurries prior to drying, reducing energy consumption by 40-60%
  • Chemical Intermediate Purification: Washing and concentration of precipitated chemical intermediates (calcium carbonate, barium sulfate, aluminum hydroxide) with counter-current wash water injection for maximum purity
  • Caprolactam/Nylon Intermediate Processing: Separation and washing of caprolactam crystals and intermediates in nylon-6 production with corrosion-resistant construction
  • Coal Tar/Coke Processing: Solids removal from coal tar distillates and coke oven byproduct streams at elevated temperatures (up to 120°C)
Working Principle

The separator operates on the same centrifugal sedimentation principle as smaller models but scaled for industrial throughput. The feed enters the bowl and is accelerated by the rotating distributor to near-bowl speed before entering the disc stack. The 520mm bowl diameter and 3,800 rpm speed generate 4,200 G of centrifugal force, causing solids to rapidly sediment on the disc surfaces.

Sedimented solids slide outward along the discs and accumulate at the bowl periphery, where they are continuously ejected through precision nozzles. The nozzle diameter—selected based on calculated solids loading—controls the degree of thickening. Larger nozzles yield higher throughput but lower concentration; smaller nozzles maximize thickening at the expense of capacity.

The clarified liquid flows inward and exits through a centripetal pump (paring disc) at the top of the bowl. This pump recovers approximately 50% of the pressure energy, reducing downstream pumping requirements. For wash applications, clean wash water can be injected at the bowl periphery to create a counter-current washing effect, displacing mother liquor from the discharged solids and improving purity.

Selection Guide
  1. Chemical Compatibility Assessment: Provide the complete chemical composition of your process stream, including pH, chloride content, temperature, and any trace corrosive species. Our materials engineers will recommend the appropriate alloy (SS316, Duplex 2205, or Hastelloy C-276) based on pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) requirements.
  2. Throughput and Solids Loading: The DNS-520C handles 15-40 m³/h liquid throughput with solids loading up to 10,000 kg/h. If your solids loading exceeds this, we can configure multiple machines in parallel or recommend our larger custom models.
  3. Hazardous Area Classification: If the machine will operate in a classified hazardous area (Zone 1 or Zone 2), the ATEX-certified version is required. Specify the gas group (IIA, IIB, IIC) and temperature class (T1-T6) for proper certification.
  4. Wash Requirements: If you need counter-current washing of discharged solids, specify the required wash ratio (kg wash water per kg solids) and wash water quality. Wash ports can be integrated into the bowl design.
  5. Process Integration: We can supply the DNS-520C as a stand-alone unit or as part of a complete skid-mounted system including feed pump, pre-strainer, control panel, interconnecting piping, and discharge collection tanks. Skid mounting reduces on-site installation time by 60-70%.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: What is the maximum solids loading this separator can handle?
It can handle up to approximately 10,000 kg/h of dry solids discharge, depending on the specific gravity of the solids and the selected nozzle configuration. For higher solids loading, we can configure multiple units in parallel or offer custom bowl designs. Please provide your solids loading requirements for a detailed sizing calculation.
Q2: How do you handle abrasive solids?
For abrasive applications, it is equipped with replaceable wear protection: tungsten carbide or silicon carbide nozzle inserts, hardened disc stack spacers, abrasion-resistant bowl wall liners in hard-faced alloy or ceramic, and hardened feed distributor. These features extend service life to 3-5 years even with highly abrasive TiO₂ or iron oxide pigment slurries.
Q3: What maintenance does the separator require?
Routine maintenance includes weekly nozzle inspection, monthly bearing temperature and vibration trend review, quarterly oil change for the bearing lubrication system, and annual complete overhaul including bearing replacement and seal inspection. The integrated vibration and temperature monitoring system enables condition-based maintenance, reducing unnecessary downtime. Typical annual maintenance cost is 3-5% of the capital investment.
Q4: Can the separator handle flammable solvents?
Yes, the ATEX-certified version of the separator is designed for operation with flammable solvents. Features include nitrogen inert gas purging of the bowl housing, earthing/grounding monitoring, bearing temperature monitoring with automatic shutdown, and explosion-proof electrical components. Provide the solvent flash point and process temperature for proper safety configuration.
